Communicate like a pro
In championing clarity without further context, high school and college composition courses often fail to tell the student that clarity must align with audience expectations. The government bureaucrat weighing how to allocate a government contract will be persuaded differently than a venture capitalist considering a request for investment to support a product launch. And the methods to persuade them will differ from those used to persuade a faculty committee to accept a proposed dissertation. The writer must consider which jargon and terminology to include as a means of establishing credibility, although this may somewhat impede clarity.
But there is method in the madness. The key throughout is for the student to situate his narrative within the needs and expectations of the audience. So first, you, the student, must consider the needs and expectations of your audience. Then, you must consider how clarity, organization, and style– the latter often based in rhetorical techniques – can best captivate your audience.
Because that is your goal – to captivate, so that your audience members excitedly see themselves as players in the narrative that your writing has outlined. Your writing is now not only self-interested; instead, it resonates with the concerns of your audience.
I will introduce you to prewriting – generating ideas for your narrative considering audience needs even before you write. Then, patiently, we will work to organize your ideas so that the various propositions and thoughts cohere. Finally, with your content properly structured, we will use the correct elements of style and clarity to convince your audience.
The result will be that they will view your text with anticipation, rather than with irritation and dread.
